In 1999 Wakefield Council were amongst the first to introduce Emergency Planning Training for Schools in response to guidance issued by the then DfES. Since 1999 a series of workshops and refresher training for senior school staff and Governors have been held to look at various aspects of dealing with an emergency affecting a school, including:-
• An assessment of existing arrangements
• Case studies of school related incidents
• Information gathering
• Hazard assessment
• Emergency response
• Control and co-ordination
• Emergency Control Centre
• Information processing
• Communications
• Public relations
• Emergency Plan preparation
• Training and exercises
The workshops also provide schools with the opportunity to discuss incidents which they have been involved with and provide lessons learnt. At the end of the workshop schools have the knowledge to prepare their own Emergency Plans and are provided with a template to assist in this process (please see Related Links).
Future Training
We are not currently planning any training for schools, however, any school requiring assistance with preparing, reviewing, training or testing their emergency plans should contact the Emergency Planning and Business Continuity Manager (please see Related Links).
